Outline

Thesis: Arthur Miller does not believe in the teachings of the secret based on the themes and re-occurring motifs found in his novels The Crucible and Death of a Salesman.

Arthur Miller does not believe in the secret because:

1- Arthur Miller is a realist.

Topic Sentence- A fundamental aspect of The Secret is optimism.

Support 1- “the term "realism" encompasses the period of time from the Civil War to the turn of the century during which…wrote fiction devoted to accurate representation and an exploration of American lives in various contexts.”(realism)

Support2- “Character is more important than action and plot; complex ethical choices are often the subject.”(realism)

2- His literature criticizes the American dream.

Topic Sentence- Another key element to The Secret is the ability to work for what you most desire.

Support1- “Americans have traditionally centered their efforts on thrift and hard work.”(Americandream)

Support2- “the maxim that, “the one who dies with the most toys wins,””(Americandream)

3- He puts his characters in hopeless situations.

Topic Sentence- The Secret suggests that regardless of your starting point in life, you can achieve any amount of success.

Conclusion:

Based on his lack of expressing any form of positivity or generosity in his novels, Arthur Miller cannot be a believer in The Secret. His tendency to place his characters in hopeless situations demonstrates his belief that life itself is hopeless. Miller’s realism contains opposite values to that of The Secret. All of this however is not to say that Arthur Miller did not enjoy his life however. Arthur Miller simply disagrees with the fundamentals of The Secret.
